The tragic true story

Joan Grey, Joan I of England or also known as the Queen of the Nine Days For her brief reign, she was a noblewoman and, de facto, queen of England and Ireland from July 10 to July 19, 1553.

Joan was the great-granddaughter of Henry VII through her maternal grandmother Mary Tudor, Duchess of Suffolk, and was also the second niece of King Edward VI. She had an excellent humanist education as well as a reputation for being one of the most cultured young women of his time.

In May 1553, Juana married Lord Guilford Dudleythe young son of Edward’s prime minister, John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland.

In June of the same year, King Edward VI wrote his will, naming Joan and her male heirs as successors to the throne, in part because her half-sister Mary was Catholic, while Joan was a fervent Protestant. and, as such, would support the reform of the Church of England.

After the death of Edward VI, Juana was proclaimed queen on July 10, 1553. However, support for Mary began to grow rapidly, and Joan was gradually abandoned by her supporters until she was overthrown by the Privy Council of England, which suddenly changed sides and proclaimed Mary queen on July 19 of the same year.

Joan was locked in the Tower of London and accused in November of high treason. Although she initially managed to avoid execution, she began to be seen as a threat to the Crown when her father Henry Grey, Duke of Suffolk, became involved in Wyatt’s Rebellion. Finally, both Juana and her husband were executed on February 12, 1554.
