The showrunner of The Acolyte explains the final twist of episode 5 and Mae’s new mission

A twist at the end of episode 5 Star Wars: The Acolyte just changed everything, setting Mae (Amandla Stenberg) particularly on a completely new path. Now that Qimir (Manny Jacinto) has been revealed as the mysterious Sith Lord, the fates of many characters have changed, some more drastically than others. While fan favorites Yord Fandar (Charlie Barnett) and Jecki Lon (Dafne Keen) have been killed among a host of other Jedi, Master Sol (Lee Jung-jae), Osha, and Mae have survived, and this last one has survived in secret. She switched places with her twin to undertake a new mission.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Leslye Headland briefly discusses what Mae’s new mission is, now that she has betrayed her Sith Master with no known intention of serving him again. Headland makes it clear that Osha’s survival has changed everything for Mae, who no longer wishes to simply kill the Jedi involved in that fateful night on Brendok. Now, according to Headland, “Part of their mission is to demonstrate how the Jedi, and especially Sol, are not who Osha thinks they are.” Mae is now much more focused on winning over her sister than her Sith Master.

Could a reckoning be necessary for the Jedi?

With Mae now disguised as Osha and intent on exposing the Jedi, the Jedi may very well have to face a reckoning. Sol, of course, is at the greatest risk of this, considering the fact that he was directly involved in what happened on Brendok, but he’s not the only one. Clearly, other Jedi have also done the work to keep this incident a secret, meaning that any investigation Mae begins could lead to the Jedi becoming as secretive and dogmatic as they are in the Star Wars prequel trilogy.

On the other hand, everything may not be what Mae thinks it is either. Spending time with Sol and the Jedi may show Mae the good parts of the Jedi Order that she never got to witness, and might even make them like her in some way. However, chances are Mae will find the evidence she’s looking for and the Jedi will be forced to confront the decision they made in the heat of the moment, all in the name of being protectors of peace.

This twist in episode 5 of The Acolyte begins the third act of season 1, which will take viewers to the end of this particular story. There are still quite a few questions left unanswered, especially about what happened that night in Brendok, but they will no doubt be answered later on, given that snippets of footage have already been seen in various trailers. For now, viewers will have to keep waiting to see how Mae’s mission plays out in The Acolyte and whether he will succeed in exposing the Jedi or not.

Episode 5 of The Acolyte is already transmitting. New episodes are released Tuesdays on Disney+.
