Israel closes Kerem Shalom border after Hamas attack – DW – 05/05/2024

The Israeli authorities closed this Sunday (05/05/2024) the Kerem Shalom border crossing that leads to the south of the Gaza Strip, after a rocket attack claimed by the armed wing of the Hamas terrorist group, the al Qasam Brigades.

“Approximately ten projectile launches were identified crossing from the area adjacent to the Rafah crossing towards the Kerem Shalom area,” the Israeli military said in a brief statement.

After the attack on the border, which was used to send humanitarian aid to the enclave, Israeli media have reported seven people injured, three of them seriously, without specifying whether they are soldiers or civilians.

The Israeli Army has not reported the level of damage caused in the attack or fatalities.

Israel reopened the Kerem Shalom crossing in mid-December, after criticism from numerous international organizations regarding the little humanitarian aid entering through the southern Rafah crossing, bordering Egypt.

According to Hasmas, the target of the attack was a military post from where Israel was supposedly organizing the imminent invasion of Rafah, in addition to coordinating daily bombings in the south of the enclave.
