This Tuesday, the Ecuadorian lawyer specialized in human rights Paulina Reyes was released after an arrest that social organizations described as illegitimate, as it occurred after reporting alleged mistreatment of inmates.

On social networks, the Alliance Against Prisons indicated that the jurist was apprehended by military personnel, after accusing them of violating the rights of prisoners at the Cotopaxi Prison.

The message, widely shared on digital platforms, questioned the arrest that “demonstrates how it is intended to establish a regime of abuse, torture and arbitrariness in prisons and outside of them.”

After the flagrante delicto hearing, Reyes was released, although they wanted to prosecute her for alleged lack of respect for authority.

On January 9, President Daniel Noboa decreed the existence of an internal armed conflict as a measure to facilitate operations against organized crime and since then control of the penitentiaries has been in the hands of the Armed Forces.

According to experts and activists, prisons went from being in the hands of the leaders of criminal gangs to military control, in which there are no guarantees of rights.
