Galstanyan also threatened to install tents in the most central places of Yerevan, although since Sunday his followers began setting up camps near the legislative building.

Addressing the police who blocked access to Parliament on Saturday night, the leader of the protests pointed out that the protesters “are not the type of people who get tired,” so law enforcement will have to patrol the streets. of the city day and night.

He later called on citizens throughout Armenia to join the demonstration starting this Monday.

The protests, led by the leader of the Tavush diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, erupted in the country following the news that Azerbaijan and Armenia had agreed on the delimitation of the border in the Tavush region.

In fact, Yerevan agreed to hand over to Baku four towns that were part of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic and had been under Armenian control since the 1990s.

The Tavush for the Fatherland movement demands the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian, accusing him of having handed over the land to Azerbaijan.

On April 19, Pashinyan’s government announced that it had agreed with Azerbaijan to draw the border between eight villages to conform to the limits that existed when the two countries were part of the former Soviet Union.

In 2022, both countries began negotiating a future peace treaty mediated by Russia, the United States and the European Union.

In late May 2023, Pashinyan declared that Yerevan was prepared to recognize Azerbaijan’s sovereignty on its Soviet-era borders, including the Nagorno-Karabakh enclave, sparking strong protests from the Armenian population.

Despite this, in September of the same year Azerbaijan launched a military operation that led to the disarmament and self-dissolution of the Armenian militias of Nagorny Karabakh and, finally, to the announcement that this rebel republic ceased to exist as of January 1, 2024.

On December 7, Baku and Yerevan affirmed that there is a historic opportunity to achieve the long-awaited peace in the South Caucasus region, confirmed the intention to normalize relations and reach a peace treaty on the basis of respect for the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
