Currently more than 11.8 million hectares, or 35.74 percent of the total natural area, are affected by degeneration, which represents a risk of desertification, said the senior government official at the launch event of the Month. Action for the Environment and Vietnam Sea and Islands Week.

Quoc Khanh emphasized that the situation of drought and saltwater intrusion in this Indochinese nation continues to worsen, which increases the risk of desertification and will be very harmful, especially for the agricultural sector.

In this sense, the Vietnamese head of the sector called on ministries, sectors, agencies, organizations, local authorities, companies and all citizens to adopt practical measures to resolve these phenomena and protect the environment. He also called for strict control of waste from construction, industry and agriculture, to ensure that it is treated in accordance with environmental standards before being dumped.

World Environment Day was launched this year with the theme “Land restoration, fight against drought and desertification”, taking into account that today up to 40 percent of the planet’s land surface is degraded, directly affecting half of the world’s population and threatening almost half of global GDP.
