More than 49 million French people will be called to the polls again at the end of the month, following the decision of the head of state to dissolve the National Assembly last night in the face of the categorical victory of the National Rally party (RN), identified with the extreme right, in the European elections, in which he obtained 31.4 percent of the votes.

According to the decree, political forces will have from June 12 to 16 to register their candidacies, with the electoral campaign beginning on the 17th.

The first round of the legislative elections will be on June 30 and the second round a week later, votes from which the 577 seats of the National Assembly will emerge.

In 2022, the ruling Renacimiento party and its allies lost their absolute majority in the lower house, although they retained the highest number of seats (245), ahead of the bloc of leftist forces (131), RN (89) and of the conservative party Los Republicanos (61).

With the announcement of the call for new elections, the different camps began to draw up strategies and outline alliances with the ruling party trying to recover ground, the extreme right to come to power and the left to present an alternative scenario. npg/wmr
