Ukraine should reflect on withdrawing its troops from eastern and southern Russia to start peace talks, as requested by Russian President Vladimir Putin, as the military situation on the ground worsens, the Kremlin said this Sunday (06/16/2024).

“The current dynamics of the situation on the front clearly shows us that it continues to get worse for Ukrainians,” said spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

“It is likely that a politician who puts the interests of his country before his own and those of his masters should think about such a proposal,” he added, referring to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Putin stated on Friday that he would negotiate with Ukraine if it withdraws its troops from the four regions that Moscow claims and partially occupies and if kyiv renounces joining NATO.

Both Ukraine, NATO and the United States repudiated Moscow’s conditions to end the invasion launched in February 2022.

Peskov insisted this Sunday that it was not an “ultimatum” but a “peace initiative that takes into account the realities on the ground.”

Peskov’s statements coincide with the second day of the peace summit in Ukraine, held in Switzerland without Russia’s participation.

During the meeting, which brings together more than 90 countries in the town of Burgenstock, Zelensky promised to make peace proposals to Russia once they have been validated by the international community.
