Russia and North Korea will sign a major cooperation treaty – DW – 06/18/2024

The president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, gave his approval to the project of a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty with North Korea, which he plans to sign with his North Korean counterpart, Kim Jong-un, during the state visit that begins this Tuesday (18.06 .2024) to the neighboring country, the Kremlin reported today.

The presidential provision says that it is about “accepting the proposal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, agreed with the interested federal government bodies and organizations, to sign a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement between the Russian Federation and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea”.

This document will take into account “all the universal principles of international law, will not have any confrontational nature, will not be directed against any country and will be aimed at guaranteeing greater stability in the Northeast Asia region,” said the presidential advisor on international politics, Yuri Ushakov.

So far no further details have been given about the content of the treaty in question. However, according to Putin, both countries have plans to collaborate in building a security architecture in Eurasia, as well as countering sanctions from the West, which considers that North Korea supplies ammunition for Russian war activity against Ukraine.

On the sidelines, Ushakov noted that the new treaty will replace those signed between Moscow and Pyongyang in 1961, 2000 and 2001.

Russia thanks North Korea

Ahead of the visit, Putin praised Pyongyang for its “unwavering support for Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine.”

The Russian leader also thanked North Korea for its solidarity on important international issues, adding that he was “committed” and ready to counter the West’s aspiration to prevent the establishment of a multipolar world order.
