Russia launched a “massive” attack overnight against energy infrastructure in western and southern Ukraine, the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy said this Saturday (06/22/2024).

“The equipment at Ukrenergo (operator) facilities in the Zaporizhzhia and Lviv regions was damaged,” the entity said. Two employees were injured and hospitalized in Zaporizhzhia, he added.

This is the eighth “massive” attack on Ukrainian power plants in the last three months, forcing power cuts, the ministry said.

Russia has already destroyed half of Ukraine’s energy capacity, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said days ago, who urged on Thursday to install solar panels in “every school and every hospital” “as soon as possible.”

The CEO of Ukrainian operator DTEK, Maxime Timchenko, warned that Ukraine will suffer “a serious crisis this winter” if its Western allies do not mobilize.

Ukraine is asking for help to rebuild its power grid, which requires significant investments.
