The recent agreement between North Korea and Russia hhas generated concern in the United States, Japan, South Korea and other countries, due to its implications for global stability.

About, Samuel Fernández, international analyst, underlines that this alliance between two sanctioned nations represents a challenge to the international order.

“It is a challenge to the international order, because they are two countries sanctioned at different levels,” said Fernández in conversation with Al Pan Pan with Mirna Schindler. “North Korea, being sanctioned, does not have the expedition to be able to receive from everywhere, because that is prohibited.” This country, however, maintains borders with China and Russia, who continue to provide resources despite the sanctions.

North Korea continues to advance its nuclear program and frequently launches rockets over the Sea of Japan. “We still have North Korea with a very active nuclear program and that has that nuclear power,” explains Fernández. These acts have forced Japan to change its defense policy, adopting a more active stance.

The alliance between Kim Jong-un and Vladimir Putin is not new, but the recent collaboration intensifies tension in an already conflictive region. “This has a much broader plane in this relationship, because it could be anecdotal that a Kim Jong-un meets Putin, but he is creating a bigger problem in the area,” comments the analyst.

The situation is further complicated by China’s presence in conflicts with the Philippines and Taiwan, in addition to Russian aggression in Ukraine. “The area has become a very dangerous axis for world peace,” warns Fernández. The agreed strategy between North Korea and Russia includes the provision of weapons, a move that raises concerns about the balance of power in the region.

“This shows that much larger pieces are being played in an extremely sensitive place,” concludes Fernández.
