Sports, politics and literature are the trinity on the altar of the passions of Gustavo López Cárcamo, renowned sports journalist. He had kept the last of these three as a secret of confession.

Because of this, you probably don’t know him as the avid reader who consumes a book a month. Less likely is he to know that he had carried his dream of becoming a writer on his back until he managed to shake off his fears and publish his first novel: I’m left with my guilt.

“I always liked to write. but I had never published, because in my opinion, it is a requirement to read a lot to be able to write. I felt this fear that I had to read more, I reached the age of 49 and I still thought the same thing; Damn, I’m never going to write. I guess it was an excuse not to do it,” commented the communicator.

With a mature idea of the story he wanted to tell, he hired the services of a publisher and finally took on the task of writing and publishing. At that moment another fear visited him: the ghost of what will they say.

“I thought about using a pseudonym, but people close to me, including my editor, convinced me that didn’t make sense. I began to convince myself that I had to be brave. Why can’t someone from the sports world, a lawyer or an engineer be a writer?” López confessed.

With that courage he created his first novel, in which he tells the story of a family whose members end up separating their paths due to different life circumstances.

The plot reflects on the complicated process of dealing with guilt and its characters show both sides of the coin: one of them manages to forgive herself and rebuild her life, while another, as in the title, decides to stay with her guilt. and it has a negative ending.

“Writing the book helped me convince myself that one has to learn to apologize to oneself and distinguish that there are blames that are imposed on one by society, by one’s family, for that matter. There are others who, yes, you screwed up and it’s your fault, but if you don’t apologize you’re going to be stuck in different areas of life,” explained the Tigo Sports presenter.

According to López, the work is set in the second half of the 20th century and takes place between Heredia, Liberia, Nueva Segovia (in northern Nicaragua) and Comayagua (Honduras). The selection of locations are traces of his personal life, which were marked in the book.

The sports commentator affirms that he has “the first memories of his life” in the Honduran city and that although he has never visited Nueva Segovia, three people close to him were originally from this Nicaraguan area.

He also opens up and states that one of the characteristics he doesn’t like about himself is his lack of ability to be impressed, which has a low impact on his emotions about the book.

“What I do value a lot is the reaction of people with so much affection, and the purchases, because what I want is for people to read. I don’t assure you that you will like it, I think that one writes to generate something, it may be that you don’t like it and it seems aberrant to you; but let it provoke something,” she concluded.

Of course, this book will not be a debut and farewell, López announced that he has already reported his second novel, which will be based on a tragic true story, which he knew first-hand.
