STCC’s College for Kids offers educational and fun experiences

Do you have children who are willing to learn while having fun? Consider enrolling them in College for Kids at Springfield Technical Community College, a summer program that exposes participants ages 11 to 16 to learning opportunities available in the fields of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM). ).

“We believe in nurturing young minds and fostering a love of learning that goes beyond the traditional classroom,” said Associate Vice President of Workforce Development Gladys Franco. “Our program offers a unique combination of educational enrichment, hands-on activities and creative exploration, all designed to spark curiosity and inspire future academic pursuits.”

Here are STCC’s College for Kids programs available through August 2. Sessions run from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., except for Airbrushing, Math Matters, and Create Mobile Apps, which run from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Some programs are free, while others have a cost. • CPR and First Aid: June 25-27: Designed specifically for mature youth interested in caring for others (i.e. babysitting, camp counseling, or lifeguarding) to learn essential CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and first aid skills for babies, children and adults.

• It’s Your Turn, Take the Mic, July 8-12: a public speaking workshop that seeks to empower girls to become more confident and self-esteem and develop the poise and communication skills needed to speak effectively in public. .

• Future STEAMers, July 8-12: Future STEAMers will provide immersive experiential learning opportunities in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.

• Origami, July 15-19, July 12-26: Origami students will learn the traditional Japanese art technique of assembling paper into a variety of decorative or representational and polyhedral (solid figures with 6 or more faces) shapes.

• Introduction to Acting, July 15-19 and July 22-26: What makes theater so powerful? It teaches us to discover how we feel while giving us the courage to express ourselves! Throughout this program, our main objectives will be to develop self-awareness, cultivate self-confidence and explore our inner creativity.

• Airbrushing, July 15-19 and July 22-26: Does your child love to paint? Students will use vibrant colors and designs to learn how to operate an airbrush machine to design projects.

• Math Matters, July 15-19 and July 22-26: This camp explores various math applications and projects, from financial literacy to physics. Students will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities while engaging with mathematical concepts. This program is offered in partnership with STEM Starter Academy and HSI STEM.

• Create Mobile Applications, July 15 to 19 and July 22 to 26: This session is an introduction to the exciting world of developing applications for mobile devices and tablets. Students will create applications for mobile computing devices culminating in a student portfolio of Android applications. This program is offered in partnership with STEM Starter Academy and HSI STEM.

• Basic Design, July 29 to August 2: The Basic Art Design course is an introduction to the elements of two-dimensional design.

• Basketball and Physics, July 29-August 2: The Springfield Ballers will help players of all levels develop their athletic abilities and improve their skills in all positions.
