Fried chicken ‘karaage’ is by far the favorite food of Japanese high school students

Hunger strikes at midday break time. Opening the lunch box and finding a food that we like is undoubtedly a joy. One thousand high school students revealed in a survey what their favorite dish for lunch is.

The prepared lunch store PECOFREE (based in Fukuoka) surveyed over the Internet a thousand high school students who usually bring lunch to school.

85.5% said they bring their lunch five to seven days a week. This information reveals that they eat it almost daily, not only during the week, when there are classes, but also during the weekends when they go to preparatory academies or attend extracurricular activities. 92.4% of the students responded that their parents prepare them for them.

More than half, 53.3%, said they bring their own lunch in order to save. Regarding the amount of money they spend if they buy their lunch at a 24-hour store on a day when they have school, 24.8% said they spend 300 yen or less; 40.6%, between 301 and 500 yen. In total, 65.4% manage to limit their spending to 500 yen or less. If they are looking to make the most of the restricted amount of money they receive, they can’t afford to spend too much, but if they want to be satisfied after a meal, it seems that bringing your own lunch is a must.

Regarding what food they love to see in their lunchbox (multiple answer), fried chicken karaage was the most popular, with 68.9%. In the case of boys the figure increased to 73.9%. This dish was followed by the hamburger, with 41%; the egg omelet, with 37.9%. This allows us to deduce that meals that include meat as an ingredient are especially popular.

Other responses were also received, for example, a 16-year-old girl said she was happy when they prepared a breaded pork fillet for her. tonkatsu when he took the university entrance exam. A boy of the same age said that he gets the impression that they spend much more time preparing it when he sees that there is little frozen food.
