FedEx retires 22 Boeing 757s

The world’s largest cargo airline recalled 22 Boeing 757 aircraft in one go. The 757-200F model represents 1/5 of the entire FedEx Express fleet, not counting subsidiaries and subcontractors.

The company will still have around 90 aircraft of the model in its fleet, which have a capacity for 36 tons of cargo. According to YahooNews, FedEx is due to receive two more 777F aircraft and 14 new 767-300F aircraft from Boeing, all within the next 2 years. They also indicate that the permanent retirement of the 757 meant assuming a charge of 157 million dollars.

The fourth quarter of 2023 had also assumed amortization costs of $70 million when retiring 18 MD-11s and 34 engines. Between 2022 and 2024, the FedEx fleet was reduced from 417 to 389 aircraft. The most popular model is the 767 with 134 aircraft, followed by the 757.

This does not mean that the company has already set a date for the final retirement of the 757. The reduction is more due to the fact of the loss of the contract with the American postal service, the USPS, and the constant reduction in the air cargo sector in the post-pandemic period.
