The mayor of Maipú, Tomas Vodanovicand the Minister of the General Secretariat of Government, Camila Vallejo, conducted an inspection tour this Wednesday of the construction of the second Mental Health Center (COSAM) of the commune, which is 60% complete in its authorization.

For the construction of the new health facility, which will be located at #698 Manchester Street, use was made of the infrastructure of an old school that had been abandoned for years, becoming a focus of insecurity and incivility for the entire neighborhood.

“We are very happy to be able to start this last stage of the works to recover this important space, which unfortunately had been abandoned and vandalized. But the good news is not only the recovery of space for the neighbors, but also the entry of a new offer in mental health, which was a demand deeply felt by all the inhabitants of the commune.”said Mayor Tomás Vodanovic.

“It is these works that give meaning to the work that the Government authorities do, which also gives meaning to the social work of our country, fundamental for the development of any democracy. When the President of the Republic talks about recovering public spaces, he does not only speak in the sense of recovering public squares that were taken over by drug trafficking or crime, but it also has to do with recovering spaces that serve the community, through infrastructure projects that respond to the needs of a community. Therefore, we have a great task here to improve the living conditions of our population, because health is a priority and, particularly, mental health.”said Minister Camila Vallejo.

The intervention in this space has an investment of more than $877 million by the Central Metropolitan Health Service (SSMC).

It is estimated that the works should be completed in September of this year, and then service to users will begin in March 2025.

The new COSAM will be destined to provide care to 50 thousand neighbors, responding to a historic mental health debtsince Maipú currently has only one center of this type for a population of more than 600 thousand inhabitants.
