A cumulative total of 757,805 cases of acute respiratory infection (ARI) have been reported in the general population. Making a comparison with the same cut in 2023, a decrease of 11.3% is observed with a record of 854,559 accumulated care by IRA as of week 21 of 2023.

The District seeks to ensure that more than 110 thousand people, including girls, boys, adolescents and adults, begin, continue and/or complete their vaccination schedules. All biologics from the Expanded Program on Immunizations (EPI) are available, especially those that help maintain respiratory health.

Dr. Derly Hernández, pediatric infectious disease specialist at the Colombian Society of Pediatrics (SCP), has shared a series of essential recommendations to guarantee the health and safety of these groups during the peak of respiratory infections. Her advice focuses on hygiene practices, prevention, and timely medical care that we should all follow to mitigate the spread of respiratory illnesses in our homes and communities.

Tips from Dr. Derly Hernández:

  1. Space Ventilation:
    • Keep windows open to ensure good air circulation.
    • Avoid excessive use of heaters that can dry out the environment and facilitate the spread of viruses.
  2. Avoid Contact with Sick People:
    • Limit close contact with people who have respiratory symptoms.
    • If someone at home is sick, keep them in a separate room, if possible.
  3. Vaccination:
    • Make sure children and older adults are up to date on their vaccines, including flu and COVID-19 vaccines.
  4. Healthy Eating and Hydration:
    • Provide a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables that strengthen the immune system.
    • Maintain good hydration by drinking enough water.
  5. Avoid Crowded Places:
    • Reduce time in closed, crowded spaces, especially during infection peaks.
  6. Timely Medical Care:
    • If you have any symptoms of respiratory infection, consult a health professional.
    • Do not self-medicate, especially in the case of children and older adults.

Review the recommendations of Dr. Derly Hernández in the following video.

During peaks of respiratory infections, prevention is key to protecting the most vulnerable. Young children and older adults have weaker immune systems, making them more susceptible to severe complications. By following these tips, you can significantly reduce the risk of infection and ensure your well-being.
