The creators of ‘Veronica Mars’ brought us another series about a peculiar researcher… and zombie

Comic book adaptations to television live not only on superheroes. There are several titles with these characteristics that have been instant hits and others that have gone more unnoticed, which does not mean that they are gems to discover. As was ‘iZombie’, which will no longer be available on Netflix next June 29.

I am already dead

Liv Moore’s promising future as a medical student is cut short the day when, without eating or drinking it, ends up turned into a zombie. liv He goes to work in the morgue to be able to feed himself of brains, but it doesn’t end there: doing so transfers memories and personality traits of the dead… which can be very useful in solving the mystery of why they were murdered.

‘iZombie’ is a series created by Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wrigth (creative duo behind ‘Veronica Mars’). The series has a total of 71 episodes of 45 minutes each, broadcast between 2015 and 2019. Originally, it aired on The CW and concluded in its season 5 with a closed ending.

The Serie adapts the comic book collection of the same name by Chris Roberson and Michael Allred, although the truth is that they have little or nothing to do with it apart from the physical appearance of the protagonist and her becoming a zombie. Published under the Vertigo imprint, the original comics had a totally different tone and included more bizarre plots and characters, such as terrier men or grandparents reincarnated as chimpanzees.

The series had a procedural structure, with Liv helping Clive, one of the police officers, solve the crimes thanks to the information she obtained from the flashes that came to her from the lives of the owners of the brain she had eaten. An approach that began in a fairly conventional way, before derailing in the best of ways.

After a first season in which he increasingly takes advantage of the absurdity of his approach, a second season arrived that He embraced comedy and dared to play in the most enjoyable way. with all the possibilities of Liv’s gift.

A brain ice cream?

Some of the best episodes of the series are in that season, where we saw the protagonist in situations that were each funnier and more hilarious. What would happen if Liv ate the brain of a college hazing addict? Or that of a librarian who writes erotic novels?

The series has moments of pure enjoyment, and many geeky winks (It is not in vain that they refer to zombies that have lost their will and only act out of hunger as “the Romeros”). But what makes it special is that has a lot of soul.

It makes you love the characters and creates very fun dynamics between them: Liv adopting different personalities every day, Ravi’s comic notes, Clive’s unexpected love for the ‘Game of Thrones’ books, Blaine’s machinations. .. a cast of characters that you want to accompany season after season.

It is true that, as usually happens in stories that have drama and comedy almost in equal parts, from the halfway point of the series the plot turns more and more into its “serious” part (everything that has to do with the zombie virus) and precisely when it shines the most are its lighter episodes and its moments of silly humor.

For this reason, my favorites are I fervently recommend the first two seasons.. The rest of the seasons continue to entertain (and still have, although less, those crazy moments that I like so much), but I only recommend them if you are hooked enough by the characters to want to see where the story takes them.
