Luckily there are always exceptions and one of the best is ‘Ida’, a 2013 Polish film by Paweł Pawlikowski and can be seen on Filmin.
Set in 1962, ‘Ida’ tells the story of Anna, a novice nun about to take the vows that he discovers from an aunt of his that she is actually Jewish. Because of this, he embarks on a quest with his aunt to discover her family’s history, as well as his own.
‘Ida’ is a beautiful film that use immaculate black and white during its eighty minutes, transporting the viewer to a world devoid of color and strength in which however there is enough humor. Genuine humor born from the contrast between the puritan Ida and her carefree aunt, providing a balance between the serious and the comic without being forced.
This tone is double-edged weapon which is built through silences and a not very agile montage, where the scenes are presented to us in a contemplative way, without referring to an extradiegetic soundtrack, being as frivolous as the world in which these 2 women live. A world in which even the most macabre and beautiful rituals They are carried out without any hint of expression.
