Colombia reports five deaths from FARC dissidents – DW – 03/29/2024

Fighting between the Colombian army and a group of FARC dissidents in a rural area of Algeria, in the department of Cauca, left at least five Second Marquetalia guerrillas dead, the military institution reported on Thursday (03/28/2024).

“The offensive against this armed group continues and more neutralizations could be reported after carrying out verifications and searches in the area,” the Army added in a brief statement.

The authorities showed a video on their social networks detailing the weapons and ammunition that were seized during the operations.

These combats occur a day after the Army captured 11 people who were supposedly part of a “finance commission” of the Second Marquetalia that committed crimes in the departments of Meta, Tolima, Caquetá and Huila.

The Second Marquetalia, a dissidence formed by signatories of the 2016 peace agreement between the Colombian government and the former FARC guerrilla who took up arms, is commanded by Luciano Marín Arango (alias ‘Iván Márquez’).

‘Iván Márquez’ was the FARC’s chief negotiator in the dialogues with the Colombian government that took place in Havana and concluded with the signing of the peace agreement in November 2016.

However, he decided to return to arms in August 2019 when, after missing for several weeks, he reappeared in a video at the head of a group of armed men to announce the creation of a FARC dissident, which he called Second Marquetalia, alleging that the government He was breaking the agreement.

Last February the government and the Second Marquetalia announced that they would open a peace process that has yet to be determined when it will officially start.
