Independent platforms Yo Sí Te Creo in Cuba and the Gender Violence Observatory of Alas Tensas magazine (OGAT) reported this Friday of a new femicide casenumber 17 so far in 2024.

“We verify the feminicide of Ariannis Torres Tamayo, 38 years old, which occurred on a public road in the town of Chivirico, Guamá, in the province of Santiago de Cuba. The aggressor was his ex-partner,” OGAT published on his Facebook profile.

According to the observatories, Torres Tamayo left three children, of which two are minors.

“Our condolences also go to his mother, who is sick and depended on the care of Ariannis, other family members and close people,” they added.

With this new fact, verified with community sources in a joint effort of OGAT and Yo Sí Te Creo in Cuba, the under-registration carried out by the observatories until Thursday, April 19, is 17 femicides. They have also reported two attempted feminicides and five cases that require access to police investigation. The latter include the death of a woman in Villa Clara, two in Havana and two others in Santiago de Cuba.

Independent civil society groups are investigating a femicide alert in Manzanillo, another in Ciego de Ávila, two in Havana and one more in Artemisa. They call on citizens to report any case of sexist violence by contacting them.

Despite the critical situation regarding gender violence on the Island, recently the official newspaper Granma dedicated an extensive article to demonstrating that the Criminal Procedure Law, approved in Cuba in 2021, protects women.

However, Dinosca Rivera Martí, one of the confirmed fatalities of sexist violence in Cuba in 2024, had survived a previous attack of his murderer, the father of her children. He attacked her with a machete and was detained after she reported him. The Police released him a few days later. Months later, he killed Rivera Martí with a knife, on the street and in daylight.

In January, the Cuban Heidy Peña had to resort to social networks so that the police could arrest the father of her children for threatening her. Previously, despite his complaints and the evidence presented, the agents had arrested the individual twice and released him on bail, Peña reported on Facebook.

Of the 89 fatalities verified in 2023 by the Feminist Magazine Observatory Tense Wings (OGAT) and the Yo Sí Te Creo platform in Cuba, at least nine had denounced their attackersas DIARIO DE CUBA showed in an analysis.
