“Historias y Geografía” is the new film by 34-year-old Chilean director Bernardo Quesney. The film is a comedy starring Amparo Noguera in the role of Gioconda Martínez, an actress vilified after becoming famous in the 90s for a comic character. To redeem herself, she tries to adapt La Araucana to the theater, but everything turns out badly. More or less, that’s how the synopsis works.
According to Quesney told La Tercera, the film is a “black comedy about cultural appropriation” and, of course, this is exposed in scenes where, for example, there are Haitians impersonating Mapuches. However, in the same interview with the aforementioned media there was a phrase that captured all the attention and was widely commented on on social networks. “I find it very funny to live in Chile and be Chilean”said the director.
“I laugh a lot every day”
Quesney, also known for directing video clips by prominent Chilean musicians like Gepe (in fact, he took charge of “playaplaya”, his latest single), explained his words: “I laugh a lot every day, when I listen to people. I think everyday life is strange. And Santiago is very strange. I recently saved a person from committing suicide on the subway; Later, the same person hit me and blamed me. I don’t know if it’s Chile or the world, but I see a lot of absurd things constantly.”
“It is super difficult to talk about Chile. Whenever I think I am talking about Chile, it seems that Chile destroys itself, or self-destructs. I feel like every time I try to describe where we’re going, it’s like someone who is bipolar. All my films always have a delay: they talk about things from three or four years before, but because one is living them and I think it is good. The opposite happens to me, for example, if I see a documentary praising the social outbreak,” he added.
