More than a thousand works in competition from various countries aspire to such high distinction in the genres of Novel, Theatre, Essay on an artistic or literary theme and Literature for children and young people.

The Venezuelan director and actor Carlos Arroyo, the Colombian playwright Carlos Satizábal and the notable Cuban actor Fernando Hechavarría will analyze 251 theatrical proposals.

Meanwhile, the Novel court is made up of the Mexican journalist and narrator Fabrizio Mejía, the Argentine writer and sociologist Hernán Ronsino and the Cuban theaterologist Lourdes de Armas, all of whom will evaluate a total of 700 works.

The Guatemalan Arturo Arias, the Argentine poet Liliana Bellone and the Cuban researcher and professor Leonardo Sarría, will select the most relevant text in the Essay section.

For its part, in Literature for children and young people the jury is made up of the Cuban singer-songwriter Liuba María Hevia, the Brazilian journalist Ricardo Fernandes and the Dominican narrator and translator Geraldine de Santis. To put the finishing touch to the gala this Friday at 7:00 p.m. local time, singer-songwriter Diego Gutiérrez will offer a concert.

The event accompanies the celebrations for the 65th anniversary of the prestigious institution, on April 28, and is one of the great protagonists of its history.

Convened in 1959 and held, for the first time, in January 1960, the Casa de las Américas Literary Prize is the oldest cultural contest in the country, and the contest of its type with the longest history on the continent.

Since its founding, it has managed to summon many of the most outstanding figures of literature and thought from Latin America and the Caribbean as jurors, which has not been an obstacle for it to also bring together great personalities from other regions of the world.
