The Municipality of San Salvador de Jujuy, in collaboration with CONICET and the National University of Jujuy, is carrying out Big Toucan Week, an initiative that seeks to raise awareness about the importance of protecting this emblematic species and its habitat.

Cristina Ramondegui, Climate Change coordinator of the Ministry of Planning and Environment, highlighted that the project originated from Ordinance 7337 of 2019, which promotes the generation of a protection plan for the Great Toucan, Ramphastos Toco, “we communicate with the Institute of Andean Ecoregions, dependent on CONICET and the National University of Jujuy, with whom we signed a mutual cooperation agreement to develop this project,” he explained.

Ramondegui explained that the Toucan protection plan covers three main axes, “one is environmental education, for the conservation of this species and biodiversity in general; another is the citizen science part, which is the contribution of data from citizens to collaborate with the generation of knowledge; and the last axis is the scientific research part, which is the contribution of data from citizens, precisely an activity inherent to CONICET.”

For his part, Román Ruggiera, researcher at the Institute of Andean Ecoregions, detailed the activities scheduled for the week, “we are going to have activities in different parts of the city and aimed at different audiences: the Monday, May 6 we will be in the morning Belgrano Square, doing a little dissemination, telling people what the project is about, how they can collaborate and what the main achievements we have had are. In the afternoon we will be at the Xibi-Xibi Park, also commenting a little on our activities and achievements. He Tuesday 7 We are going to Libertador General San Martín, since we have an agreement with the Bird Watchers Club and schools, with some very interesting activities that they have organized; he Wednesday the 8th we will be in Parque General Belgrano de Alto Comederoin coordination with NIDO, generating activities with primary and secondary schools.”

We are going to have a live music band, we are going to do raffles, we are going to be launching our own digital application, our own website, where people will be able to upload their reports in a much simpler and more attractive way. what he had been doing until now.”
