Bogotá, May 22, 2024

Troops from the 26th Brigade of the National Army, the Amazon Coast Guard Group of the Navy and the Colombian Air Force, in a binational operation with the 16th Jungle Brigade of Brazil, located and destroyed, on the banks of the Puré River, on the border between Colombia and Brazil, 16 dredges dedicated to the illicit exploitation of gold, which caused serious environmental damage with the indiscriminate dumping of chemicals and the impact on the wild flora and fauna of the area.

Once the place was located, and after the Regional Military Exchange Meeting (RRIM), between Brazil and Colombia, the action plans of the operation were synchronized that, by river and air, reached the border area between both nations, where they were also located 5 backhoes, by means of which the area was being preyed upon and causing ecocide.

In the sector, criminal gangs had been depredating a large part of the forested area with the use of backhoes and chainsaws, generating irreparable damage to the ecosystem with indiscriminate deforestation. This illegal maneuver was carried out to make way for dredges that, through the use of chemicals, such as cyanide and mercury, searched for gold in the region.

This result significantly affects criminal finances, since the machinery was carrying out illicit exploitation of mining deposits, extracting about six kilograms of gold per month, which was traded in illegal markets.
