In the early hours of Sunday, May 5, the Colombian Geological Service (SGC) reported a 3.5 magnitude earthquake in Saladoblanco, Huila. The earthquake had a depth of less than 30 km.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located in Saladoblanco, a municipality located southwest of the department of Huila. Despite the magnitude of the earthquake, no damage or effects of any kind have been reported due to the characteristics of the telluric movement.

The earthquake was also felt in nearby municipalities such as Oporapa and Pitalito, located 12 km and 17 km respectively from the epicenter.

The SGC continues to monitor seismic activity in the region and asks the population to remain calm and follow the recommendations of local authorities in case of future earthquakes.

Additionally, it is important to remember the precautions people should take during an earthquake:

  1. Duck and cover: In most situations, you can protect yourself by immediately crouching down on your hands and knees before the earthquake knocks you over.
  2. Cover your head and neck: Protect your head and neck (and entire body if possible) by getting under a sturdy table or desk.
  3. Keep calm: Being scared can only paralyze you or make you make mistakes.
  4. Stay away from windows and objects that could fall: If possible, in the few seconds before the shaking intensifies, quickly move away from glass objects, hanging objects, book shelves, display cases, or other large furniture that could fall.
  5. Don’t run away: Avoid panic as it can be as dangerous as the earthquake.
  6. Don’t use elevator: If you are in a high building, do not use the elevators.
  7. If you’re in bed, stay there: Protect your head with a pillow. Broken glass on the floor can cause injuries if you walk or lie on the floor.
