La Rioja is the autonomous community that had the least regional debt at the end of 2023, with 1,625 million euros, followed at a distance by Navarra (2,951 million), Cantabria (3,316 million), Asturias (4,243 million), Extremadura (5,322 million) and the Canary Islands (6,518 million).

This is reflected in data from a report recently published by the Foundation for Applied Economic Studies (Fedea), which shows the evolution of regional debt over the last 20 years.

According to these Fedea data on regional debt, The community with the highest debt is Catalonia, with 85,986 million euros (31% of GDP).

The next community that closed 2023 with a higher level of regional deficit was Comunidad Valenciana, close to 57,993 million euros (42.2% of GDP). It is also located in the second level in the difference in regional debt in the last 20 years, since it has increased its debt by almost 50,000 million since 2003.

Andalusia is the third autonomous community with the highest regional debt at the end of 2023, close to 38,649 million euros. And Madrid follows (35,875 million); Castilla-La Mancha (16,156 million euros); Castilla y León (13,865 million); Galicia (12,170 million); Murcia (12,139 million); Basque Country (10,661 million); Aragón (9,186 million) and the Balearic Islands (8,579 million).
