The Percy Boland Maternity Hospital, the main maternal and child health center in Santa Cruz, is preparing for a new 24-hour strike this Wednesday, May 15. This protest measure seeks to pressure the authorities of the three levels of government to address the urgent needs of the hospital, which include the lack of items, infrastructure and equipment.
Andrés Panoso, representative of Social Control of the Percy Boland Maternity, pointed out that the strike is due to the lack of concrete responses from the authorities to the staff’s demands. “The authorities did not comply. They promised to present projects and progress, but there is nothing,” said Panoso.
The strike joins a series of mobilizations that have been carried out in recent weeks, in response to the critical situation facing motherhood. Neonatology spaces are saturatedthere is a shortage of personnel to care for newborns and the infrastructure is in a deplorable state.
Precarious conditions
The precarious conditions of the Percy Boland Maternity Hospital put the health of mothers and newborns at risk. The images circulating on social networks show babies sharing incubators and even sleeping on sofas and armchairs.
Hospital staff are exhausted and frustrated by the lack of attention to their demands. “Motherhood is falling apart”said Laura Rojas, executive of the Percy Boland Maternity Union, last week. “We don’t have items, we don’t have anything, people are working as best they can, but we are already tired,” she added.
New pressure measures are expected
Although this Wednesday’s strike will last 24 hours, the emergency services emergency will continue to function normally, with reinforcements to guarantee attention to the population. However, workers warn that they could take more drastic measures if their demands are not met.
