“El Cantor del Puerto”: Atrium of La Matriz will receive a work about Jorge Farías

  • In addition, it will be presented on Tuesday, May 28 at noon at the Valparaíso Municipal Theater in a performance open to the community.

This Saturday, May 25 at 7:00 p.m., “El Cantor del Puerto” returns, a multidisciplinary work that addresses the life and work of Jorge Farías, recognizing the urban and popular culture of Valparaíso.

This production, which has operatic edges, is produced by the local company Teatro Conciencia, directed by Macarena Paredes and Christian Verdejo and has 18 artists on stage, including musicians and different actors who represent the different stages of Farías.

“We always thought about doing this work, but little by little it became more than that, a great project with live music and performance, and from a theatrical work we went on to practically configure a popular opera, with condiments that make us relive that Valparaíso of the past, of the splendor of the port,” said Paredes and Verdejo.

This initiative, they continued, “stands out for its ability to unite and gather the Buenos Aires community around the music and history of Jorge Farías. Being a transversal project that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and involves different actors in the city, it creates a space for cultural encounter and enjoyment, generating greater social cohesion and strengthening the social fabric of Valparaíso.”

“We tour Valparaíso from the 1940s to 2000. We will travel through the life of Jorge Farías from his
childhood, when they called him under the pseudonym ‘El Mexicanito’, to later appreciate Farías in his
heyday and decline,” stressed the pair of Buenos Aires directors.

“El Cantor de Puerto” is a work that is designed to be exhibited in any territory, be it a stage, a cruise ship, a plaza, a soccer field or a bar. The idea is that all people can see, remember and imagine those bohemian times of Buenos Aires, young times for Valparaíso.

“We want to reach many places and people in order to decentralize our art, destigmatize our port and dignify the artists in the area,” concluded the couple of directors, Macarena Paredes and Christian Verdejo.

THE LEGACY OF FARÍAS

The recognition of Jorge Farías lies in having been the one who first popularized “The Jewel of the Pacific”, in a heartfelt version that was prior to that of Lucho Barrios. His voice and his characteristic image of eternal dark glasses appear in one of the key scenes of the film “Valparaíso, mi amor” by Aldo Francia, released in 1969.

This iconic performance catapulted him to popular recognition that will see in this work a journey through his life from the 50s to the 2000s, all with a background of the city that saw him die poor, alone and without a stable residence, Valparaíso.
