One of the two large forest fires affecting the Pinar del Río municipality of San Juan y Martínez is now under control.

Forces from the Forest Ranger Corps (CGB) and the Agriculture system managed to contain the fire that devoured about 150 hectares in the Agua Dulce area, and at the close of this information they were carrying out the “ash guard” to ensure its extinction.

Meanwhile, a second incident that extends through the foothills, in the area known as Maquina Vieja, has already exceeded 370 hectares, and remains uncontrolled.

Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Pereda Burón, head of the CGB in Vueltabajo, stated that, despite its magnitude, so far it does not pose a danger to the population, since the flames are far from the communities.

The official explained that work has been done on the application of specialized technical measures to reduce combustible material, and that the rains recorded in recent hours have caused the fire to reduce and advance slowly.

Although the causes are being investigated, Pereda Burón warns that man’s negligence has been the main factor in the forest fires that occurred in Pinar del Río in 2024.

The 78 events of this type recorded so far have affected more than a thousand hectares of forests, with a very high cost from an economic and environmental point of view.
