Two men “trapped” in a clothing store in Cali, after the “owner” of the establishment closed the door on them. And an individual dressed as a “policeman” entering to capture them when they were accused of a “robbery.” That was the montage that went viral through a video on social networks.

The images quickly spread due to the curious fact recorded by a camera that pretended to be a security camera: two thieves locked up while trying to rob a store.

Thus, Colonel Carlos Oviedo, commander of the Cali Metropolitan Police, criticized the effects of this type of content that circulates on the internet.

“An alleged theft was observed in a commercial establishment. Criminal investigation and intelligence capabilities were immediately deployed in order to establish what happened,” said the colonel.

As there were no complaints of any kind regarding the episode, the Police began a search to locate the store that was seen in the footage.

“After several days of neighborhood work and verifying social media profiles, and an analysis of the video, We were able to establish that it is a video where a performance is performed in order to generate entertainment in an irresponsible manner.“added the colonel.

The commander of the city Police called on the citizens and the content creators who made the montage to “be aware and avoid creating this type of material that generates anxiety and fear, as well as institutional wear and tear.”

Previously, a source from the institution had assured this newspaper that they suspected the video for two aspects:

  • Watermark, since “security cameras do not have” those types of resources.
  • Uniform of the subject who pretends to be a police officer, because he uses elements, such as rubber boots, that do not correspond to the real clothes.

How to know if a video or photo is fake?

The first thing that is recommended is to analyze the different elements that make up the photo or video.. As mentioned in the previous case, by the police officer’s uniform it could be identified that it was manipulated content.

If you want to make sure whether a photo is taken out of context or not you can do so with a method known as ‘reverse search’. That is, in a search engine, such as Google, you can upload that photo in the ‘Images’ section and there you will find details such as the origin of that photograph and what the real context was when it was published.

You can report false content on the internet.

The Ministry of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) also recommends that you try to summarize the information you have seen in the video and search for it on the Internet by entering keywords. Check what type of data appears. If you can’t find context, that’s a sign that it may be unreal.

By identifying that it is false, you can report it on the same social network where you saw it to stop its spread.
