During a public event held this Tuesday, Former President Iván Duque drew attention and asked to keep in mind the importance of the upcoming changes in the Constitutional Court scheduled for 2025, suggesting that they could be related to the idea of the constituent assembly promoted by the current government.

According to the former president, the departure of four judges from the High Court next year, after completing their term, could be the beginning of a serious crisis for Colombian democracy. “The strategy of talking about constituents and re-election is closely linked to the fact that in the next year there will be four replacements in the Constitutional Court of Colombia. If in those four seats we have a submissive, submitted, docile and palatial court, our democracy will be seriously threatened.”Duque assured.

The former president also stated that the government of President Gustavo Petro does not have enough time to convene a constituent assembly within conventional legal frameworks, so it could be looking for alternative mechanisms. “The times that this requires are not given to the government, because they are more than two years or almost two years, so They are looking for a spell and regular mechanism to make a constituent of a popular nature, resembling the one made by Maduro two years ago in Venezuela, and in that way restore the presidential re-election to perpetuate himself in power,” explained the former president.

Faced with this possibility, Duque stressed the need to maintain the independence of the Constitutional Court and called on citizens to reject any constituent proposal that is made and that could prolong Petro’s mandate, and even “put the country’s democracy at risk.” ”.

Although Petro has stated in the media that his plans do not include being re-elected in 2026, Duque warned that the replacements in the Constitutional Court next year could be used strategically. by the government to promote its ideas of a constituent and establish presidential re-election. Which, according to him, represents a threat to all Colombians.
