According to Cenais, the earthquake, which occurred at 10:55 local time (14:55 GMT), did not cause material damage or injuries.
The earthquake – the ninth noticeable this year – was located exactly 7 kilometers southeast of the town, according to the institution.
Enrique Arango, head of the National Seismological Service, reported on social networks that the organization also received “reports of perceptibility“in several locations in the eastern provinces of”Santiago de Cuba, Guantánamo, Granma and Holguín“.
Cuba registered a total of 7,475 earthquakes in 2023, of which 14 were perceptible, according to the Cenais annual summary.
The magnitudes ranged from less than 3 to 5.9 on the Richter scale.
The Oriente geological fault, the main area of seismic activity and constituted by a plate boundary south of the eastern region of Cubamarked the highest number of earthquakes on the island in the past year.
