An earthquake of magnitude 4.3 on the Richter scale shook eastern Cuba this morning, with its epicenter 7 kilometers south of the city of Santiago de Cuba, according to journalist Cuscó Tarradell.

The National Seismological Service recorded the earthquake at 10:54 am, locating it at the coordinates 19.95 degrees north latitude and -75.83 degrees west longitude, at a depth of 25.5 kilometers.

Doctor of Science Enrique Arango Arias, specialist at the National Seismological Center, confirmed that the tremor was also noticeable in the neighboring provinces of Guantánamo, Granma and Holguín. This is the ninth noticeable earthquake of the year in the region.

The event caused alarm among residents of Santiago de Cuba, many of whom left their homes as a precaution. However, so far no material damage or human casualties have been reported.

On May 16, two other perceptible earthquakes were recorded, both measuring 2.8 on the Richter scale, in the provinces of Camagüey and Guantánamo, in the central-eastern part of the island.

The one recorded in Camagüey had a depth of 52 km and was located 16 km south of the city of Nuevitas, while the one in Guantánamo occurred 8 km north of the city of Baracoa, at the eastern end of the island.

In this regard, the magazine Juventud Técnica reported that this earthquake was noticeable at 12:35 pm, local time, northeast of Baracoa, province of Guantánamo.

“It had a depth of 7.1 km and a magnitude of 2.8. So far, reports of perceptibility have been received in some locations in the municipality of Baracoa. At the time of reporting, no material or human damage has been reported. This is the perceptible earthquake No. 8 of the year 2024,” they added.

A week earlier, the National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS) recorded an earthquake of magnitude 2.8 on the Richter scale at 3:12 pm, local time, in Matanzas.

According to the CENAIS report, the earthquake was located 3 kilometers north of Santa Marta, in the municipality of Cárdenas, with coordinates 23,170 degrees north latitude and 81,280 degrees west longitude, at a depth of 5 kilometers.

The towns that felt the earthquake were Varadero and Santa Marta, according to reports on social networks, but no material damage or victims were reported as a result of the earthquake.

On April 24, two earthquakes were also reported south of Sibanicú, in the central-eastern province of Camagüey. Reports of this movement were received in the town of Mola, in the municipality of Sibanicú, although no material or human damage was reported.
