An earthquake of magnitude 4.3 on the Richter scale was recorded today at 10:55 AM local time, according to the Cuban Seismological Service (CENAIS). The epicenter of the earthquake was located 7 km southeast of Santiago de Cuba, in the province of Santiago de Cuba.

Response from the authorities

So far, no significant damage or casualties have been reported as a result of today’s earthquake.

Dr. C. Enrique Arango, Head of the National Seismological Service, shared on his Facebook profile that the earthquake was “located at the coordinates 19.95 degrees north latitude and -75.83 degrees west longitude, at a depth of 25.5 km.”

Dr. Arango added that “so far, reports of perceptibility have been received in the city of Santiago de Cuba and in several locations in the provinces of Santiago de Cuba, Guantánamo, Granma and Holguín. At the time of writing this information, no material or human damage has been reported.”

The Cuban Seismological Service continues to closely monitor seismic activity in the region and urges the population to stay informed and follow safety recommendations in the event of possible aftershocks.
