The end of the measure that allows free entry of food, medicines, medical supplies and hygiene to Cuba is approaching again.
Before the end of the month, the Cuban government must announce if it decides to extend it for three more months or if the exceptional nature of that provision adopted for the first time in July 2021 has ended.
Last March, the leaders waited until the last minute before making its extension official until June 30, 2024.
In the resolution signed by Nelson Enrique Cordovés Reyes, head of the General Customs of the Republic, it was recognized that “the limitations on the offers of products that motivated the exemptions persist in the country.”
As the crisis not only continues, but worsens every day, it is not surprising that the rule that facilitates the free importation of essential products to Cuba is extended again.
Travelers “take advantage” of tariff benefits, according to Cuban Customs
In any case, we must closely follow the news on this topic. Cuban Customs have recently reported on cases in which took advantage of tariff benefits to bring large volumes of medicines to the island, in order to be resold.
The first deputy head of the entity reported last week that they are “rigorously combating the smuggling of controlled medications.” Likewise, he described as “irresponsible and unscrupulous” travelers who “try to introduce this type of merchandise into the country for profit.”
What can you take to Cuba for free?
Since July 2021 and to date, it is possible to enter Cuba, without limits, or payment of tariffs, food, toiletries, medicines and medical supplies.
Travelers who fly to the island only with their personal effects (25 kg) and luggage containing this type of products may pass through the one known as Green Channel of the Cuban Customs.
