Moderna tests a combined vaccine against flu and covid

Moderna presented this Monday the preliminary results of a combined vaccine against flu and covid viruses. According to the North American pharmaceutical company, the results show a higher immune response than vaccines against both pathogens administered separately. The groups in Those tested are people between 50 and 64 years old, and 65 years old and older. “Combination vaccines have the potential to reduce the burden of respiratory viruses on health systems and pharmacies, as well as offer people more convenient vaccination options that could improve compliance and provide greater protection against seasonal diseases.” , they assured.

The new remedy is called mRNA-1083 and is in phase 3 trials, the last before being approved for widespread use. It uses messenger RNA technology to combat pathogens. This was what allowed them to be developed against Covid at high speed, since it had been studied for years and has some advantages over traditional ones, which use parts of bacteria or viruses to train the immune system. Specifically, mRNA-1083 combines components of MRNA-1010 against three strains of seasonal flu and mRNA-1283, its latest development against the coronavirus. They were applied in two groups of 4,000 adults.

The formula presented an “acceptable safety and tolerability profile,” according to the company. The most common side effects were pain at the injection site, fatigue, myalgia – muscle discomfort – and headache. The results must be taken with caution because they have not yet been reviewed by other experts nor have they been published in a scientific journal. The firm intends to present them at an upcoming medical conference. If they obtain approval from the health authorities, they hope that the remedy will be available in the fall of 2025.

One of the advantages of this combined formula is that it would improve coverage rates and raise the low vaccination rates against the latest covid mutations. The pharmaceutical companies Pfizer and Novavax are also developing vaccines of this type but have not yet made their results public.
