Water emergency in La Rioja: Snowological station installed in Famatina

The work was carried out within the framework of the efforts that Governor Ricardo Quintela carried out during the year 2023 before the Undersecretariat of Water Resources of the Nation for the installation of the first meteorological radar in the province, which will be linked to this installed station. in the Famatina department.

The main characteristic of this snowological type station is that it has the capacity to measure amounts of fallen snow. That is why the decision of the provincial government, through the Ministry of Water and Energy, is that this measurement station be installed in Famatina, in Portezuelo de Illanes, in the vicinity of station 8 of the “La Mejicana” mine, 4,370 meters high.

The impact that it will have for our province is that from the measurement of the fallen snow it will be possible to determine the contribution of water that will be generated to the Antinaco – Los Colorados valley through the action of thawing.

Having this system in a context of water emergency like the one our province is going through is extremely important, since it will make it easier for the authorities in the area to make better decisions to face the consequences of this climatological phenomenon of lack of rain.

It is important to highlight that this station will be linked to the meteorological radar installed in Patquía, in the Independencia department, thus allowing the extension of coverage to be expanded to more accurately analyze the weather events that take place in the Rioja territory.

This station is the first station with snowological characteristics, with the capacity to measure the amount of fallen snow that settles in the province. Next, we will continue with the installation of four other meteorological stations that will also be linked to the radar in the town of Patquía.
