The Secretary of Education of Ipiales, Nataly Chamorro, indicated that the Teachers’ Union of Nariño, Simana, specified that they will join the national Fecode strike that begins this Wednesday, June 12 in protest against the draft Statutory Education Law that was approved in third debate in the First Permanent Constitutional Commission of the Senate of the Republic on June 5.

“There are 79 educational institutions and 18,700 students, who will not have classes until dialogues are established between the National Government and Fecode,” said Chamorro.

From Simana in Ipiales, Camilo Bonilla indicated that there will be 3 days of strike, on Wednesday, June 12, the mobilization, on Thursday, June 13, the day of assemblies, on Friday, the Plenum of presidents and on Monday, June 17, the taking the capital of the country.

He specified that the project violates the fundamental right to education and could even open the doors to the privatization of the educational system in Colombia.

Chamorro highlighted that the Simana union, representing the teachers of the department of Nariño, has decided to join this national mobilization. Educators express concern about the implications the bill could have on the education system and teachers’ rights.

Opinions

«We are supporting our teachers in their decision to join this strike. It is essential that their voices be heard and their opinions considered on an issue as crucial as education,” said Secretary Chamorro.

The draft Statutory Education Law, which is in the process of being discussed in Congress, has generated controversy among educators. Fecode and its affiliates argue that the law, as proposed, could negatively affect the quality of education and the labor rights of teachers.

In Ipiales and other regions of Nariño, the national strike is expected to have a significant impact on school activities, with possible closures of educational institutions and marches in support of the demands of the teaching sector.
