The innovative ‘School and Coffee’ project, led by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, has received renewed impetus thanks to the collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Department’s Coffee Growers Committee. This joint effort also has the active participation of municipalities, principals and teachers, all united with the common objective of offering development opportunities to rural youth and stimulating regional growth.

The Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development, Marcos Barreto García, explained that the project seeks to adapt education to the most productive activity in each territory, in this case, coffee growing. According to Barreto García, “the intention is for young people to be able to study and acquire skills relevant to their environment, with the aim of motivating them to stay in their regions and contribute with their work and knowledge to local development.”

The Bajo Palmar Departmental Educational Institution (IED), in Viotá, was the setting for the relaunch of the program, where students showed how they are learning and applying advanced techniques in coffee production. The productive projects that these young people are implementing in the field of coffee growing were also presented.

The meeting was not only limited to Viotá, since students and teachers from other municipalities such as Pacho, San Juan de Río Seco, La Palma, Vergara, Tibacuy, La Mesa and La Vega participated. This exchange allowed for an enriching dialogue in which experiences were shared and an environment of motivation and mutual collaboration was promoted.

The event had the support of the Caldas Coffee Growers Committee, an entity with vast experience in the implementation of this type of educational models both nationally and internationally. Your support was essential for the success of the day.

In summary, the ‘School and Coffee’ initiative not only seeks to educate young people in coffee growing techniques, but also to foster a deeper connection with their territories and generate a positive impact on rural development. Strategic alliances and a practical approach are key to the success of this project.

The educational model promoted by ‘School and Coffee’ is a clear example of how the integration of education with local economic activities can generate significant changes in rural communities. By providing young people with the necessary tools and adequate support, not only their training is guaranteed, but also the economic and social future of their regions.
