Strengthening actions aimed at reducing evasive behavior and indiscipline in the payment of taxes in Cuba constitutes a fundamental working premise for the National Tax Administration Office (ONAT).

Belkis Pino Hernández, first deputy head of the ONAT, acknowledged in statements to the press that at the end of 2023 and until May 2024, 210 reports of complaints for alleged tax evasion were presented, of which 207 correspond to natural citizens and three to legal entities. .

Of them, he explained that 30 files were archived for making full payment of the debt, 117 were filed and 63 cases were pending.

Pino Hernández pointed out that given the high number of demands, the country maintains strict control in collaboration with other State agencies such as the Ministry of Foreign Trade, the General Customs of the Republic and the Central Bank of Cuba to detect illegalities, and adopt the pertinent measures against criminal acts.

At the end of the first quarter of the current year, around 80,852 control actions were executed and debts for a total amount of 819,594,000 pesos were determined, he noted.

The First Deputy Head of the ONAT cited among the main factors that contribute to an event of this nature, the outdated, manipulation or alteration of books, records, sub-ledgers and other models established by the Cuban Financial Information Standards, the cancellations of accounts by charging without documentary support and non-declaration of the hired workforce, to name just a few examples.

Judith Navarro Ricardo, specialist at the Legal Directorate, referred to the high number of authorization withdrawals, embargoes and regulations for leaving the country that have been carried out in response to the fraudulent actions of certain taxpayers.

He also highlighted that these efforts were carried out under a protected legal basis.

The National Tax Administration Office’s mission is to collect income from the State budget, which is why taxpayers’ advice is necessary so that they comply with their obligations on the established dates.
