“I have always understood that my mission is to carve a path of opportunity for future generations.” Under this premise, Shamy Álvarez, a member of the Mokaná ethnic group and plastic artist, begins by telling about the teaching work to which he has dedicated a large part of his life after training children and young people in the art of the municipality of Puerto Colombia and their townships.

From a very young age he showed the leadership caste and his interest in guiding others on that same path. He firmly believes that art together with leadership, a sense of belonging and solidarity is the perfect formula to break down the sociocultural barriers that still persist in communities and territories.

“I have wanted to take up and channel all the knowledge acquired over these years into a project that allows me to interact closely with children and young people in vulnerable situations in our municipality, seeking through art a gradual reconstruction of the social fabric. . “It has been a rewarding process that has allowed me to further explore the role of educator, while at the same time it has contributed to breaking down the barriers of social inequality that unfortunately still persist, in a widespread way, throughout the country,” he expressed.

Álvarez is referring to the ‘Pintando Sueños’ project that he resumed this year and which consists of independent painting workshops so that the little ones can explore, ideate and boost their creativity and talent through art.

“We currently have 60 children who benefit from these workshops and the projection is to increase the number to 100. Art is transformation and the classes have been widely accepted by the Buenos Aires community, it is a space where children give free rein let loose their creativity and they even see themselves as the great painter that Leonardo da Vinci was,” he said with some enthusiasm.
