The World Baseball-Softball Confederation (WBSC) has reiterated its enthusiasm for the premiere of baseball5 at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, in Senegal.

WBSC officials fully support the decision of the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to evolve its approach to the sports program of the long-awaited youth event, to better fit it into the local context, explained Jit.

The IOC worked closely with the Dakar 2026 Organizing Committee to determine its competition programme, taking into account an updated set of sporting principles, with the aim of providing a sustainable and credible model.

This modality constitutes a dynamic and urban version of traditional baseball and has experienced rapid growth since its launch in 2017.

With mixed teams of five players and maximum squads of eight, along with minimum equipment requirements, this variant of baseball is perfectly aligned with the Olympic Agenda 2020+5, which emphasizes gender equality and the attractiveness of youth.

That baseball5 will be competed in the Dakar 2026 Games is excellent news for Cuba, which won the title in the first world championship of the youth category, held in Ankara, Turkey 2023.
