The municipality of Cereté joined the list of jurisdictions that have declared a public calamity in Córdoba due to the intensity of the rains that have generated flooding in several areas of this section of the country, where there is already a record that would exceed the 5,000 families affected.

The mayor of Cereté, Said Bitar expressed concern about the imminent arrival of the La Niña phenomenon and its potential to wreak havoc in his municipality, where a meeting of the Expanded Departmental Risk Management Council was held on June 19.

“We have a budget of 150 million pesos from the Risk Fund all year round. We already have victims, the Caño Bugre has already flooded to a large extent, we have that latent risk of the Sinú River and we have that latent risk of those rainwaters that are going to leave us more affected. So, we do have to find a way to see how we can unite to make a call to the National Government,” said the municipal leader.

Bitar, who has been emphatic about the critical points along the Sinú River, highlighted the recent damage caused by the flooding of Caño Bugre, where several ruptures have occurred. The situation is further aggravated by the presence of debris, garbage and heavy sedimentation.

“In response, the mayor presented a project to the Ministry of the Environment seeking support to address this problem and avoid a major catastrophe. In addition, the municipality commissioned a consulting firm to carry out a study to identify critical points within the municipality, but budget constraints hamper intervention efforts“, stated the municipal administration through a statement.

Currently, the municipality is facing flooding in several neighborhoods, including the El Noval neighborhood, which has suffered for years due to the lack of drainage and storm sewage. “Despite the award of a contract to the Risk Management Unit for the improvement of the canal, the works have not yet begun“, indicated the Mayor’s Office chaired by Bitar.

It is worth remembering that, with Cereté, there are already eight municipalities in Córdoba in public calamity due to intense rains. Before, areas such as Ayapel, La Apartada, Montelíbano, Puerto Libertador, Montería, Lorica and Tierralta. In the next few hours I would do it too Rich Planet.
