According to the diplomat, the rights of children, mothers, youth, access to education and health are still fundamental for the Caribbean nation, because the priority and essence of the Revolution is to bring these achievements to the people.

In an interview with the Colombian weekly Voz, Caamaño listed the vicissitudes that the unilateral siege imposed for more than 60 years and the inclusion in the list of countries supposedly sponsoring terrorism bring on the Antillean people.

He commented how since 1960, successive US administrations have sought to ensure that there are needs in Cuba, that basic products are scarce and that the economy does not prosper, in order to provoke a confrontation between citizens and the government.

The ambassador also referred to the classification of the island as an alleged sponsor of terrorism, – which is a list prepared by the northern State Department – as something absolutely unilateral and politically manipulated.

Because of this, he said, it is very difficult for the Caribbean country to do business, purchase products, access credit, and therefore the situation becomes more difficult.

He recalled that Cuba was included in that list in 2020, supposedly because the Colombian government at that time had broken off negotiations with the National Liberation Army insurgency, and was asking a guarantor country, which was Cuba, and the host of that negotiation, to hand over members of that guerrilla group. That request, he argued, was absurd from any point of view since there is no way for a guarantor nation to capture one party and hand it over to another.

Despite the hostile policy that the United States practices against Cuba, he praised the strength of the process defended by its citizens since 1959 and ruled out what has been called the Color Revolution occurring there.

He asserted that his country’s revolution was not imported and that it was still standing despite the fall of socialism in Eastern Europe at the end of the last century and other unfavorable circumstances.

The certainty that accompanies the Cuban people in more than 60 years is that they do not rest in seeking solutions to their problems, he stated.

He related how one of the pretensions that existed at the beginning of the Revolution, and that has remained unchanged by the United States, but that obviously failed, is to try to besiege the Caribbean nation.

Last year, 187 States voted in favor of Cuba at the United Nations, two against: the United States and Israel, and there was one abstention. This shows that Cuba is not alone, that we are right, he stated.
