Operational problems caused the Colombian airline Avianca to cancel the return of its direct flights to Cuba from Colombia, scheduled to resume in a few days, after an extensive pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In this sense, they explained that passengers can request a refund through the airline’s platform. However, thousands of Cubans have been left in limbo and in a worrying situation after having sold everything to be able to buy a ticket, fly to Nicaragua and continue the journey to the United States.

Avianca, for its part, hides behind the need to ensure high-quality service and comply with operational standards, but has not confirmed a new date for the resumption of flights, which has generated more uncertainty among passengers.

Let us remember that this company suspended its operations in March 2020 for Cuba, as the pandemic forced the borders to close and caused a drastic reduction in international flights. Although a year later the airline announced its intention to resume its routes to Havana, some limitations stopped this decision.

After selling properties, such as houses or cars, to pay for their journey to Nicaragua, hundreds of Cubans are living in a climate of desperation after learning that Avianca had canceled their return to Havana.

Although this cancellation is temporary, no return dates have been announced and Cubans do not know what to do with the canceled tickets.

Avianca, meanwhile, has offered the option to request a full refund of the cost of the ticket, through its website in the “Reservation Management” or “Help Center” sections. Passengers must provide flight details and purchase information to begin the process.

In May 2020, this company filed for bankruptcy in the United States with the aim of seeking protection to reorganize its debts and operations. The process helped him continue operating while negotiating with creditors and restructuring his business.
