Tunja, June 26, 2024. (UACP). The Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria Educational Institution of Ráquira achieved second place in the national contest that was held in development of the Fourth Colombian Asteroid Festival, organized by the Office of Astronomy for Education (OAE) of the Community of Astronomers of Colombia (Astroco), the Astronomical Observatory of the District University and the Gimnasio Campestre School.
The contest consisted of creating a proposal with a scientific journalism focus, disseminating information about the asteroid Apophis that will be close to Earth’s orbit in the year 2029.
Asteroid Apophis, also known as (99942), is a near-Earth object (NEO), which is expected to pass near the Earth’s surface on April 13, 2029, at a distance of 31,860 kilometers.
This asteroid is a remnant of the formation of the solar system about 4.6 billion years ago and is composed of silicate materials with iron and nickel, mainly. It is estimated to be around 340 meters wide and has an elongated, bilobed shape, similar to a peanut.
