Luis Carlos Leal, superintendent of Health, assured this Wednesday, June 26, that the life expectancy of a trans person is 35 yearswhile that of the rest of the population is over 70 years old.

According to the official, one of the causes of this situation It has to do with the lack of access to health servicesaccording to several studies and without going into further details.

“Leal said that, in Colombia, the life expectancy of a trans person is 35 years, while the rest of the population is over 70 years old. One of the causes is the lack of access and opportunity in the health service,” said the Health Superintendency.

As a result of this situation and understanding that members of this community are not yet characterized by the system, Supersalud carried out a search since 2017 in the Petitions, Complaints, Claims and Denunciations (PQRD) presented in which mention of a trans person was made.

After the search, 81 cases were found in people between 30 and 35 years old. 63% of them were part of the contributory regime and 25% were located in Bogotá, 21% in Antioquia and 18% in Valle del Cauca.

The first two causes of PQRD were barriers to access to health technologies and services.

On the other hand, the entity highlighted a report carried out by the University of California, showed that more than 50% of the LGBTIQ+ population in Colombia registers mental health problemsa result of the mistreatment exercised in the system.

“Today the Superintendency has a commitment, from the User Protection delegate, the Innovation and Development Directorate and from the articulation with each of the delegates it has, to be able to strengthen the inspection, surveillance and control actions and to articulate with “the Ministry of Health the key tools to protect the health and life of the diverse population”Leal assured.

The statements were made within the framework of the commemoration of Pride month, so Supersalud developed a conversation titled: “Let’s talk about sexual and gender diversity in the health sector”to raise awareness through dialogue of the effects suffered by this percentage of the population.
