Argentina liberalizes prices for mobile phones, internet and television

Buenos Aires (EFE).- The Government of Argentina released this Thursday the prices of mobile telephone, internet and cable television services, by repealing a package of regulations dictated by the Government of Alberto Fernández, between 2019 and 2023.

“The Argentine economy was completely Cubanized. A bureaucrat on duty set the prices of the services. With absurd regulations and caps they have never increased so much. And the quality of service was getting worse. The solution is to eliminate inflation…”, the Undersecretary of Press of the Presidency, Javier Lanari, commented this Thursday on this decision on his X account.

Argentina frees technology prices

The resolution of the National Communications Entity (Enacom) was published in the Official Gazette annuls a series of regulations issued between 2020 and 2023, within the framework of the repeal of another decree from 2020 last April, to finish changing the service characteristic public of information and communications technologies (ICT) to a “competitive market” and “free setting of prices”.

The repealed regulations were issued during the Administration of President Alberto Fernández to establish in 2020 that ICT services were “essential public”, so Enacom had regulated prices.

Companies update rates

But these resolutions were challenged by the companies that provide the services and business chambers, and in some cases their application was limited by judicial measures adopted at the request of the companies.

Companies have begun to update their rates as shown by the fact that prices for the ‘Communication’ category rose 123.5% in the first five months of the year, above the average of 71.9% and within the framework of annual inflation. of 276.4% last May.
