Long has since apologized for upsetting fans, but noted how his huge emotional reaction to the death of a background character highlights how beloved the show remains.

Apologies from Tim Long, producer of The Simpsons

Speaking to TMZ, the producer said that the creative team Larry’s death was intended to hit viewers hard.even though he never had a big moment on the show.

Tim added that he feels sorry for the fans who are upset about the death, and the episode is sad overall, but he says that he likes that the fans take it as hard as Homer and the gang during the episode, because talks about how beloved the show still is.

Long pointed out that characters don’t usually die on The Simpsons, which is why fans were so caught off guard. In the episode, Homer, Moe, Lenny and Carl attend Larry’s funeral, but soon realize that they know virtually nothing about Larry’s supposed friend.

Larry’s mother, Iris, then pays a moving tribute to her late son, and then the group tells a vague fishing story at the service before scattering his ashes at their “special place,” Serenity Falls.
